To be completely honest, the short is, I don't. I’m continuing to give my body what it needs to perform optimally and keep my immune system strong. In the last 3 almost 4 years the only times I’ve gotten sick was when I was burning the candle from both ends and didn’t give my mind and body the rest it needed and that was how my body forced me to take a break. I am by no means saying I am immune to all viruses but I consistently work to keep my immune system strong regardless of the season or global pandemic scare.
In other words…DON’T PANIC! Yes, the news reports are scary, but it is not very deadly and most people are recovering without intervention. One of the easiest ways to weaken your immune system is with stress, this will make you less able to fight off any type of infection and many times can be the reason you got sick to begin with.
This should be a regular practice for everyone but just in case, wash your hands regularly. I prefer to use Thieves® Foaming Hand Soap (or Thieves® Waterless Hand Sanitizer when in a pinch) because this blend of essential oils works to ward off bad bacteria and viruses while not harming the good bacteria. Using an over-the-counter antibacterial soap will do nothing to ward off a virus and can actually weaken your immune system.
Also, make sure you are staying hydrated and exercising regularly! Water is necessary for our immune system to function properly. Remember caffeine and alcohol are very dehydrating so be sure to avoid these when fighting off an infection and increase your water intake. Exercise expands the lungs and helps to flush bacteria and viruses from your system. And again, more water!
REST - REST - REST! Your body needs sleep to heal and recover. While sleeping your body produces cytokines that kick start the immune system, help you sleep longer and help your body heal.
Be sure to add supplements like Vitamin C, B-complex Vitamins, a quality multivitamin and probiotic. Probiotics work to prevent the ability of bacteria and viruses to enter your body. Add more antiviral and antioxidant foods into your diet like garlic, ginger, turmeric, oregano, mushrooms, kimchi and elderberry.
Lastly, avoid contact with anyone who is infected. If you are really concerned, avoid large gatherings like music festivals. I know this will be an unpopular one with the SXSW music festival just around the corner but if you’re worried about catching something that’d be a prime place to start looking.
